The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.

The end of all things is near. This was written nearly 2000 years ago, and it would be easy to dismiss it as a false alarm. But what Peter said then is even more true today. I have no idea when the end of all things will come. But the end does draw near for my own life and participation in this world. So what he has to say here is relevant to me.
Because my end is near, Peter tells me to be alert and sober-minded. I do not have much time left to make a difference, and I should make the most of that time. He tells me to be alert, looking for opportunities to pray. And to be sober-minded, thinking carefully and deeply about what is going on in the world around me. Seek understanding of the real issues, not just what is at the surface.
God has given us the privilege of coming before him in prayer. To seek his direction and intercede in the lives of other people. Pray…
