Today, we will explore another Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) hymn with the music of Chester G. Allen (1838-1879). This joyful tune, was published in 1889 in a hymnal called “Bright Jewels.” The original title was “Praise, Give Thanks.” This we certainly should do each and every day (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
However, the original hymn contains the word, “Hosanna,” “Prophet,” Priest,” and Shephard,” as well as quotes Isaiah 53. We have replaced these verses to sing of His current position as Head of the Body (Romans 12:5; Ephesians 4:4)!
We kept much of the hymn, which allows the hymn to retain its flow. With some a few alterations, we were able to include some great theological terms that rarely make the cut in hymnody such as: Reconciliation (Romans 5:10), resurrection (Romans 1:4), or mystery revealed (Ephesians 1:9-10).
So take this song and sing of the Gospel of Grace and praise Him!
